Let's talk about the strings. For metal rods, the question of whether they should be hollow or solid doesn't really matter. Find a piano or electronic keyboard, choose a set of notes and play them as randomly as you can to get an idea what they will sound like. If you don't do this you can easily cause an electrical short that will harm the transformer, the door chimes, and/or yourself. In other words, if our "reference" chime is 1 foot long, the next lower note in the equal-tempered scale would be 1. Loosen the fasteners and remove the chime from the wall. To start, you will need some metal pipe.
| Garden Chimes info: Draw a mark on the horizontal "anchor" piece where the hanging hole is to be. You can also do it by ear if you're either good or tolerant. A heavy outer shell, made of clay and other ingredients, is then built over the core; the inner surface of the shell conforms to the exterior of the proposed bell.
