A pipe cutter will do a smooth job of cutting and is worth the few bucks it costs. You need to make sure that you use the proper wire. Sharper tones seem to be common on very small chimes (a few inches to maybe 6 inches) which also seem to use solid rods. Thread the small piece of wood (the striker) onto the rope and secure it with a knot about six inches down from the platform. It was devised in 1805 by the irish hydrographer francis beaufort. That is why those small rods and pipes of the small, cheaper chimes are often hung from holes drilled at the top, all the same, about one quarter of an inch or so.
